So, in the outpouring of rage and frustration that is this kos entry, people are asking "what do we do"? Some people are making suggestions. I figured I'd bring out some of them.
(I'm not generally much for diaries, I usually just write for my own blog, so the entry will be initially linkless. Feel free to lay claim to your ideas in comments.)
Okay, here we go. Some are borrowed, some are mine.
First: Unsubscribe from the DSCC mailing list, and make damned sure they know why. You might also seriously give consideration to doing the same to Obama, depending on how you feel about him. Lots of people are saying this, it makes sense.
Second: Contact your Senators. Again, makes sense, lots of people doing that. What I'd suggest, though, is that contacting your congressional reps might also be good, if only so that your congressional rep knows that all the Dems are in this together.
Third: Georgia. This is a bit "scorched earth", but the DSCC desperately wants to win that seat, and they have very little time to do it. If you were planning to donate, tell them you're not, and tell them why. If you're in Georgia even better: tell them you're off the phone bank, off the streets, and are going to stay in on runoff day, and tell them why: that you feel that the administration and the Senate is taking you for a ride, and that you will not help them until they start making some gestures towards the people who brought them there.
Fourth: MyBO. Is there a group dedicated to telling Mr. President-Elect that you're seriously upset with his move to protect Joe? If there is, join it. If there isn't, make it. Hell, make one anyway: a large number of smaller groups can get more attention than one big one, especially if you join every one you see.
If you're in Georgia, DEFINITELY make a Georgia-focused one.
Fifth (this is more speculative and long-term): This is all about the "village". The netroots is outside, the villagers are inside. That needs to change. Who among the netroots is physically on the ground in DC? Who's the voice? Who's at the parties, at the functions, at the bars? Because the guys who made this happen certainly are.
Are those gates crashed yet?
Sixth, and finally: Start thinking about primaries. Primaries are where the base makes its voice heard. Primaries are what force American politicians to listen to their base, or face removal. If you start making noises about 2010 and 2012, they'll be listening in 2009. Lieberman's a start, but this isn't just about him.
No, it's about the netroots and grassroots serving notice that they will RAISE HELL, and would rather see Dems lose than be taken for granted again.
Edit: I don't think Martin should be punished for the Dems' spinelessness, personally. But if they are spineless, if they are craven cowards, then the netroots needs to work with that.
They're desperate for a win in Georgia? Fine. Set conditions for netroots support. Other interest groups do it, and clearly they just see the netroots as "just another interest group." If they play ball, the netroots play ball.
But if they don't play ball, the netroots goes home. And if Martin doesn't like it, he can damned well ask Reid about it.
