This was a scary weekend in Denver.
On Friday evening, there was a puff piece on the TV news about a family farm. This farm, north of Denver, had a surplus in their field and would be opening their farm to the public. Anybody could come to Platteville this weekend and pick whatever potatoes might be left.
Normally, this is the sort of thing that appeals to a preschool mom looking for something to do. I know this because I'm a preschool mom. It's nice to get the kids out, and maybe we meet another nice family or two.
But Saturday happened to be Denver's 150th birthday, and all of the museums, the zoo, botanic gardens, etc. were open and FREE to the public. Presumably, most preschool moms - or anybody, really - would stay in central Denver, rather than spend the $6 R/T gas it might take to get to Platteville.
But yesterday was anything but normal. Ignoring every cultural attraction in Denver, 40,000 people descended upon Miller Farm in hopes of getting free food. Forty thousand. The fields were picked clean in about an hour.
Forget bailing out the big three automakers - we are going to need food.
