So last night I am watching the Bush interveiw with Charlie Gibson. He asked Bush "Describe how he
felt about being President" in which Bush replies with the word "Joyful" Charlie raised his eyebrows
"Joyful?" he repeats, surprised.
Bush goes on to explain "I am joyful everyday for being President" he then continues to dig the whole
deeper by saying "This dosn't mean I am not sad sometimes. or don't feel for the people losing their
homes or 401ks" he stumbled a bit over the words, which is pretty normal for Bush.
Charlie was just floored by the descripton of the Presidency as joyful , he is like "Joyful, how so?"
I wondered this too. Bush illuded to the fact that he felt for the dead soldiers, but it just rang hollow. How of course he feels the weight of all that on his shoulders, but he didn't say he lost sleep over it.
Basicly he is happy as a pea in a pod "Having been President of the Greatest Nation on Earth"
There was more. Did he feel responsible for the economic crash. Of course not. Bush thinks history
will sort it out. That this all was in place before and during his presidency. In other words, he takes no
personal responsilbity. It is just something that happened while he was President.
He claims he wasn't prepared for hosting a war. He wondered if any President could be prepared for a war. He didn't say he wasnt' prepared for a Hurricane that wiped out New Orleans. Just a war, not the 911, but war.
But back to joyful. He is joyful for everyday he was President. JOYFUL.
I have not been joyful everyday. On Sept 11, 2001 I was not joyful. I was not joyful through Hurricane Katrina.
Bush did not even mention it during this interiew with Charlie. And Charlie didn't bring it up. Wuss!
I was not joyful when our country invaded Irag. Or when we tortured prisoners. The list is very long, the
things which bring our country shame worldwide. Shame from a President who can only feel joyful because he is President. Did you notice how quick he was shopping a book deal. I wonder if he felt joyful when Random House wanted to talk to Laura and not him.
One last thing that really bugged me. On the way to Camp David for Thanksgiving, Charlie asked Laura
and George if they ever expected an African American to be elected President in their lifetime. They
both answered "No"
More telling. when Charlie asked their daughter Barbara she answered "Yes, of course"
There is hope for the Bushs' yet. Both daughters show free thinking, which is the generation Obama
has reached out too, along with the rest of the world.
I don't know if I am joyful, I did feel joyful election night, when Obama won. Mostly I feel
hmmmm, yes i know Hopeful...
