This will be short and sweet. (Not sure if it really qualifies as a "Diary" - but it’s the Holidays, so I thought we could have some fun.)
I don't know if it’s a tradition or not, but the "official" White House Christmas tree in the Blue Room was to have been decorated with a rather unique ornament this year:
According to the "Washington Post"
Laura Bush asked members of Congress to pick local painters to decorate ornaments for this year's 20-foot Fraser fir in the Blue Room. The globes (to be unveiled by the first lady tomorrow) are supposed to showcase something special about each congressional district. Washington state's Rep. Jim McDermott contacted a local arts organization, which asked [Deborah] Lawrence, a collage artist, to create the local entry.

The nine-inch ball is covered with swirly red and white stripes -- and, in tiny glued-on text, salutes the Democratic congressman's support for a resolution to impeach President Bush. [Emphasis added]
Unfortunately the artist just couldn’t keep this too-good-to-be-true secret protest under her hat, and shared it with others. "Apparently, they didn't read it -- or Laura Bush is more progressive than I believed," according to Lawrence.
Having gotten wind of the tinsel tempest, Laura Bush has apparently decided those kinds of balls are not hung in the White House.
Alas and alack, the "Impeach Bush" bauble has been banned!
I guess the good thing is that it's one less shiny object to distract Dubya.
