I just found out this past week that, due to declining revenues at the city for which I work, all non-safety employees will be furloughed and city operations will shut down the final two weeks of December. Fortunately, for us, our unions and the city manager agreed that we will received regular paychecks during that time. However, at the beginning of the year, we will be deducted four hours every pay period until it balances out.
This of course is minor compared to what other kossacks and folks across the country are going through. The city will realize enough saving to prevent seven positions from being cut. Personally, this is the first time I have been directly impacted by the economy and it's a scary feeling for me and my family. As I know I am not the only one going through anxious times, I would like to use this diary as an open thread for everyone to share their own experiences, fears and advice for getting though the tough times ahead. Thanks.
