This week the company I work for panicked, did the stupid thing, and decided to layoff 40% of our staff, planning on moving most engineering operations to India. Yes, I'm one of the 2 million people losing their jobs in the last couple of months, but thankfully, I am cranking up my network of past managers and coworkers.
Also, I have my own website, BitWorks Music where you can help me out a bit by purchasing music made by an assortment of friends of mine, including yours truly. Catch me on the flip for more on BitWorks, a few brief job hunting tips, and .. puppies! OK, forget the puppies, but say yes to cool music!
First let me say how pissed off I am that some scammer guy was posting a diary here on how he lost everything and then proceeded to scam people out of their money by selling them acai berry or some crap like that. Frankly, it ruins it for those of us who really are trying to make a difference. In my case, I am revolutionizing the music industry by empowering independent artists, offering top quality MP3 and FLAC album downloads, and full multimedia album presentation as has never been done before.
So here's the drill (yes, here comes the pitch)... I'm asking you to check out BitWorks Music, and please buy an album.
If you know a young person in your life about 3-10 years old who digs quirky music and funny stories, check out Hank Hooper's "Playground Fortune Teller", a great multimedia album download for kids. Here's a link directly to Hooperville!
Want to hear my stuff? I was in the avant-progressive rock band Smokin' Granny a few years ago. Head over to BitWorks Music and click on Smokin' Granny to see our three albums of groovitude.
Want to email someone the gift of music? Go ahead--buy the album and forward them the link. Just don't forward it to 58965 people, because I may have to kill you then.
If you have any technical difficulties with the site, drop me a line and I'll be sure to get you your album(s) if there is any problem.
Now, for your job hunting tips, since I know you've been waiting for that, right?
- Above all, STAY POSITIVE. When you have a positive outlook, you will naturally convey that to a prospective employer.
- Make direct contact with hiring managers through your network of contacts. You know a lot more people than you think. Ask those in your field and those not in your field if they know anyone who does work that you are interested in. It does not matter if their company is not hiring now--make the connection now to establish a relationship. When the market turns around, the job you want will be waiting for you, but...
- Check back with prospective employers periodically, but do not pester them too often or too obnoxiously.
- Use your mad computin' skillz! The leading professional networking site in my opinion is www.linkedin.com. Also establish a network on Facebook and MySpace.
- Don't give up! No matter what, there is hope. You have a lot to offer. Remember that.
Lastly, if you happen to be an angel investor or VC who would like to support the expansion of BitWorks Music, please email me at: davido@bitworksmusic.com I am completing my business plan and will have the overview ready for you on Thursday.
Now if this isn't the most audacious shameless marketing diary you have read all day, raise your hand.. OK, you can put your hands down now.
Peace n' stuff,
david
