I was alarmed by the inauguration committee's decision to tap Rick Warren to be at Obama's inauguration. Based on what I've found out, it looks like he'd have been tapped even if McCain had won. But based on what we've found out so far, he could end up coming out with a Pyrrhric victory. Yes, he gets on the national stage--but if we play this right, he'll end up losing something more important. As in his image.
Warren's stock in trade seems to be his image as an inoffensive evangelical preacher. But statements like this could have been written by Dobson, Falwell or Robertson (hat tip to Michael D).
WARREN: I’m opposed to having a brother and sister being together and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to one guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage.
BELIEFNET: Do you think those are equivalent to gays getting married?
WARREN: Oh , I do.
Granted, I'm not entirely surprised Warren expressed such sentiments--considering that his advisor on his doctoral dissertation at Fuller Theological Seminary was uber-dominionist Peter Wagner.
We have a month, folks. Let's use the energy spent on jumping on Obama and use it to turn the hot lights on Warren. I mentioned earlier that we have a chance to throw the religious right an anvil. And I can't think of a better target for the first anvil than Warren.
