If you are fed up with Rick Warren and his choice by Pres.-Elect Barack Obama as invocation speaker, you have an easy option: unsubscribe from those daily emails that you get from the transition team.
More below the flip...
A local Obama activist and leader who has been intimately involved with the campaign in Palm Springs, CA and the Coachella Valley all along since well before the primaries notes that the Obama campaign treasures its email list above all things. If you go to the bottom of the email from Michelle Obama, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, David Plouffe, etc., click on 'unsubscribe.'
Perhaps we feel it more acutely in California because the pain of Prop 8 is still fresh, and we know so many people affected by it. But Warren isn't just about opposing gay marriage. He believes that the prayers of Jews, Muslims and others are not heard by G-d. His church theology calls for the submissiveness of women to their husbands in all situations. And he uses the worst possible language to describe these things, likening gay marriage to pedophilia and incest and abortion to the holocaust.
Katha Pollitt's piece in today's LA Times does a good job of explaining Warren in all his prejudice. It can be seen at http://www.latimes.com/... . Just copy and paste into your browser.
You may disagree with me, and I respect that. But if you are as concerned about this as I am, may I make a suggestion? Next time you get an email from the campaign/David Plouffe/Joe Biden, etc. just go down to the bottom and unsubscribe. When you do, you'll be asked why. Type in Rick Warren. The campaign prizes this email list above all. If there is a rash of opt-outs with Rick Warren as the reason, believe me, they'll see it.
And if you agree to do this, please pass this note on to others. The internet played a huge role in electing Barack. But we can also use it to make our opinions known and hold the new administration accountable.
The link will then ask for your email address and ask why you want to unsubscribe...just type in 'Rick Warren.' If we do this en masse, then the message will get through to the Pres.-Elect, Rahm Emmanuel, David Plouffe, David Axelrod, et al.
Just do it!
