Since the election, I've read dozens of diaries and hundreds of comments regarding Prop 8 and the Warren controversy. I've seen the back and forth commentary between all different sides of the gay rights issue. I've actively participated in the protests against Prop 8. One thing that caught me off guard though was the degree of support from the straight community for gay rights. It has been a big silver lining following the devastating passage of Prop 8.
Perhaps I had become a bit cynical. Perhaps growing up in the Midwest conditioned me to believe that it was always "us" vs "them". Whatever the reason, I've been truly touched by the straight community's support. I was deeply affected after seeing straight people at the protests marching alongside gay men and women. I've been moved to see some of the most impassioned pro-gay arguments on this website coming from my heterosexual brothers and sisters, including Kos himself. And I have been left speechless by my own straight family members who, because of Prop 8 and Rev Warren, finally took a stand in support of gays, willing to confront their own friends and coworkers on this issue.
So thank you straight allies. We can't do this without you. Your support is very much appreciated.
