Fox News: Rev. Wright like Jesus!!!!!!!

Here's a Fox News interview with a (white) Catholic priest who supports Rev. Wright by comparing him to Jesus.

What if we took 30-second film clips of Jesus overturning tables in the temple? Or saying you must hate your parents in order to love me? We would have thought him a crazy man.

          wierd for the networks to correct the impression they created with their loop that this man (Rev Wright) is actually a decent guy.

          All three major network, Fox, MSNBC, and CNN played the same tape and had the same story.

          I wonder if they would now rehabilitate the character they attempted to destroy and present the Reverend in a better light than when they first did.

          They (the networks) did a hatchet job on the Reverend and I hope they redeem themselves with a correction.  If they do, then the Republicans can't use Wright against Obama once he becomes the nominee.

          This interview should be sent to all the SD to watch as Clinton and her supporters are trying to use the Reverend Wright issue as a problem for Obama in the GE and the reason she should be given the nomination.

          •  I've wondered about that as well

            I knew something about this church because when I researched candidates I looked for potential problems and Wright was being talked about. I knew it would be used but I knew it was a good church with a highly thought of pastor.

            It was hard to find those links again after all this broke but I found links to many ministers and people who knew or went to the church talking about it and him in positive terms, found the links to many sermons in video, audio or text and sent them all (and often) tp the networks and shows (not FOX) with a plea for them to show the full story. I included Obama's post on Huffingtonpost and said he was either telling the truth or lying and either would be a story.
            Initially I did it because it was such an unfair attack on Obama but it soon became horror at how Wright and the church were just insignificant collateral damage. Threats and hate mail they in no way deserved just because the media wanted to use these culled phrases from 30+ years of sermons to use as a weapon against a presidential candidate.

            I didn't expect what I sent to do anything because I knew if they wanted to know the truth they would. Then it started looking worse. Panelists would note they had gone to the church or had family who did and either the subject would be changed or comments in defense of it would be ignored.
            Then I heard a couple of people say, including Jay Carney of Time Magazine, that reporters had been going through years of sermons and not finding much that was inflammatory and so the story was essentially over.
            I yelled but I don't think they heard me. If they heard years of "normal" sermons that IS the story, that is a BIG story.
            So I realize they don't care if the distorted story that brought such hate and widened division just stands, true or not. They cared about the hit and the ratings of it.
            I wondered if it was possible that they'd avoid presenting the truth because it shows how culpable they are to have shown what they did without even hinting there was another side.

            Somehow I think we failed too. We let the media have this immense power to spread a lie with essentially only Obama speaking up. The question/remark kept being "But he went and listened to that for 20 years, exposed his children, gave this hateful church money"
            Obama supporters or not...if the grassroots can't call the media on such a distorted attack then what are we for?
            Not that I know what we could do...but we should have some plan because it will come up again. I don't mean Wright, I mean the media abusing power, spreading distortion as fact.

            The media does need to make some amends, present more about Wright in a big way....it won't change Obama haters but it might reduce the hate mail and threats.
            I've talked to many people who still support Obama because "he isn't like his pastor", They had no idea the story was distorted but were quite relieved to hear it.
            I'm sure there are many who are more uncomfortable in voting for this guy they sort of liked because he listened to that for 20 years.

            So yes the media should deal with it...and soon.
            I doubt they will without a lot of pressure. I don't know how to apply it.

    is not a bigot, a racist, etc, but because someone doesn't agree with him, they call him such.  Then, the reporter comes back later and says "Just because you don't agree with O'Leilly, you label him a racist." which of course, the Fr. never did, but the reporter HELPS make the point Fr. Pfleger is saying.

    This preacher made some amazing points, he really spoke the truth! He kept cutting through Fox News SPIN!

    What reverend Wright said was 100% accurate. We can no longer allow these news outlets as well as politicians to play these Orwellian type mind games.

    I pray to God Obama wins the general I say pray because the EVIL forces see him as a threat. They will do anything & everything to stop him.

    Simply look at the demise of all those who came before him that simply wanted good to happen in America. From JFK to Michael Moore.

    I find it very telling that Fox News, who despises Clinton, has skipped over trashing her and trashes Obama 24/7. That clearly shows that he is a THREAT to these moronic Un-American spin masters.

    For the people like Bush & Fox News who have wrapped themselves in the flag while being the most Un-American people on the planet as well as in history Obama is a threat.

    He is a threat because he will RESTORE the voice of the people. This hasn't happened since the hippie movement and we all know that our government has worked overtime to never allow that to happen again.

    We now have free speech zones. When Obama is elected it will cause the ratings of one of the biggest propaganda machines in the world, Fox News to lose ratings and the war mongers and corporations who has  spilled the blood of our soldiers for profit will no longer be able to use the soldiers for their profit!

  •  Michael Pfleger is a legend

    in the Chicago Catholic community.  And the only way to really, truly appreciate him is to hear him in person.

    I saw him give the homily on a Sunday last Lent at Old St. Pats church, one of the whitest and wealthiest parishes in the city (both Mayor Daley and Dick Durbin attend Mass there).  Pfleger gave about a 40-minute homily, devoted mostly to immigrant rights. (This occurred shortly after one of the first large immigration rallies that took place last spring.)  Normally, homilies are about 15 minutes, although I am told that Pfleger's homilies at St. Sabinas often go more than one hour.  The congregation was spellbound, and at the homily's completion gave Pfleger a standing ovation.

    In my 12 years at that church, I had never seen anything like that before (except when the long-time pastor, Fr. Jack Wall, retired). Pfleger not only speaks truth to power, but does so in a way that evokes what true Christianity is about.

              Boy that reporter in the interview seemed so certain that Wright preaches gospel of hate, so certain of what the post 9/11 sermon was about. He...and way to many...clearly only listened to the clips and don't even know his sermons.

            That was amazing. I dropped out of seminary (United Methodist) half way through because of a number of issues, but part of it was my despair over the way churches had never fully embraced or even bothered trying to understand liberation theology.

            That guy is one righteous son-of-a-bitch, and I mean that in the highest respect way possible. I would go to that guys parrish in a second, and I am now unchurched, unfaithed, and not even sure I believe in a deity.

        Proped up to give people a "reason" to fear black folks, his group is very small. 95 percent of black people are Christian, and of those who are Muslim, only 2 percent belong to his group. His a VERY minor figure and should not get as much attention as he does. It's really absurd.

        He does not represent black people, or even Muslim black people. It makes me angry every time they bring him up like some of litmus test.

        •  True. Minister Farrakhan is very effective....

          Tool for the right in this country, though not everything he's done or said has been bad, which is why I don't criticize people for, say, attending the Million Man March years ago.

          On the other hand, the way they played him helped to to effectively keep some people, like my parents (Jewish Nixon Democrats), from voting consistently Democratic. (Though in my mother's case, W was able to make her into a true blue Dem.)

          My Dad basically left Los Angeles because between the constant demonization of people like Farrakhan, the 91 riots, and OJ, he was convinced there'd be armed gangs of people dressed like Public Enemy out gunning for middle class Jews any day now. I'm only exaggerating slightly.)

          This kind of Republican/media race card playing was a major reason that about 70% he would up voting for Republicans, despite basically hero-worshipping FDR his entire life.

          (Of course, since my dad was weird, he took the whole FDR package, even the internment camps -- hard for me to swallow since about 1/4 of my friends in school were Japanese-Americans and had parents and/or grandparents had actually been in them, but that's another story.)

            just about everyone misses, because almost none of his critics have ever bothered to hear one of his speeches all the way through (which I have because of an ex girlfriend who joined the nation 20 years ago)- is the fact that he's a blowhard, but most of what he's saying is absolutely correct and frankly, fairly conservative.

            If you really listen to what he says, he's been grossly misquoted and his statements highly exaggerated and generalized when they've actually been fairly specific.

            For example his comments about "False Jews" clearly isn't an attack on all Jews, only those who have betrayed the teachings of their own faith.

            He deliberately makes extreme statements (IMO) so that that people who really aren't listening will take them the wrong way, while at the same time he says "Your enemies don't want you to hear what I have to tell you - they fear the truth, I'm the only one you can trust to tell you the truth."

            Then end result is that he gets attacked by people who really don't know what they're talking about and he gets to turn around and go - "See, I don't you so..."

            Glen Beck did the same thing when he asked John Hagee if "Barack is the anti-christ" and he was attacked for it by Thinkprogress and Keith Olbermann.  He wheeled around and counter-attacked saying this is just what I predicted.

            It was also just what he wanted.

              Still, that "false Jews" line rubbed me the wrong way, but I understand why non-Jews would think it's not too offensive and perhaps even Farrakhan himself didn't quite understand what I'm going to point out.

              Many non-Jews do not understand that being Jewish is not simply a religion, it's also an ethnicity and many, many Jews who identify as such are not believers in the religion. If anything, this is more true in Israel. I personally don't believe a single word in any of the Abrahamic holy books, yet I would never convert to another religion -- even Buddism, which is closest to my own beliefs. Even doing that would make me feel very much like a traitor -- it's not like switching from being a Methodist to a Lutheran or a Baptist. It's serious stuff (don't even get me started on "Jews for Jesus", which is crazy, in a sense, since I think both religions are equally wrongheaded).

              Calling someone a "false Jew" isn't quite like calling someone a "false Christian" because they attend church regularly  yet they fail to live up to the teachings of Christ. I guess it's fair to criticize religious or observant Jews who hypocritically fail to live  up the Jewish ethics, but because one can be a Jew yet not believe a single word of the religion -- something that, at least technically, is not true of either Chritianity or Islam, calling someone a "false Jew" is almost like calling some a "false" Armenian, Greek, or African American. Anyhow, that line was probably the only  thing Farrakhan ever said that got me truly angry, for some reason.

    Hillary's campaign is pushing this again through her surragates.  I'm sure Obama's campaign has a strategy, it may not be apparent so we shouldn't panic.

    Be cool.  The polls have shown most Dems do not care about this issue.  The people that express the most concern are hard core Republicans who are not going to vote for any Democrat.

      because the media has shown it's power to distort, because the general belief about Wright (and thus his congregation) is that he preaches hate and even if Obama has regained support the church and preacher have suffered nasty collateral damage in the attack. Hate mail and threats and just a ruined reputation they don't deserve.

      We should be hyper about the media having that power, presenting ugly distorted minutes and not even hinting there is another side.

    Father Pfleger said he noticed that many black Catholics would attend Mass, then go to black Protestant churches or listen on the radio for ''real church.'' He figured, ''Why can't we have church at church?''

    He insists that the black and African elements he added to the liturgy transcend denominational lines. ''It's not Baptist to clap one's hands or have gospel music or speak in tongues and get filled with the holy spirit,'' he said. ''It's human and spiritual. No church owns that.''

      since it sprang from Catholic teachings on Social Justice. He is a powerful spokes person. I love that he used the words of Jesus to give examples of how the media uses soundbites to smear people. I said at the very beginning of the Wright flap that even the words of Jesus could be parsed in such a way to damn him too. I hope Fox plays this over and over.

            Send a producer out to stir something up with slanted questions so that the Big O can pretend he actually did the interview and spew endlessly about it.  

            This is really a two-fer because it shows how bad the Big O Show really is and gives the best defense of Rev. Wright that I have heard.
