We introduced soberboy to the Back to the Future series this weekend. We've seen one and two so far and we'll see the final one tomorrow.
I saw the first one in the movie theatre on opening night in 1985. I'd skimmed the review in the Boston Globe and knew only that they approved. I was looking for something to do with my boyfriend and suggested we go at the last minute. I remember sitting there in a full theatre struck by how different it was. It was such a feel good movie that the entire audience burst into spontaneous applause at the end. I think it was that the movie was funny, poked some fun at Reagan just after he'd been reelected in a landslide, and the soundtrack by Huey Lewis that captured me. I'd never been a fan of science fiction but found this movie light-hearted fun.
Got a Happy Story is a community gathering every Friday night where we share stories large and small that have put a smile on our face. It is a time to acknowledge the joy and wonder we experience. The Happy Story diary exists as a way to anchor the community in hope and comfort while we do the hard work of taking back our country. Everyone and all sorts of stories and pictures are welcome. May we find joy and strength here.
We have delayed the movies with soberboy because of the language. Despite the fact that I was known to swear like a sailor and soberdad actually was a sailor, soberboy hasn't heard much swearing. So this is the first time he's seen a movie with continual swearing, although no f-bombs. The content itself is certainly not an issue. It's been fun to watch it as a family, although nothing will ever beat that first time in the theatre. The second one is my favorite.

Not as much of a happy story for me is the Three Stooges. Every year there is a New Year's Eve marathon of the Stooges. The Stooges have always been banned in the house. I was subjected to them far too much as a child and I never liked them. My father thought they were hilarious, as did the staff at summer camp. But I wasn't paying attention after Jeopardy last night and soberboy was quickly entranced. I still despise the Stooges but watching my son convulsing with laughter was fun for me. When I told soberdad about it he immediately joined soberboy for the next one. I was assured by Eddie C and trashablanca in Eddie's diary last night that Y chromosomes are required to appreciate the Stooges. I really don't like them at all but it did put a smile on my face seeing a 12 year old boy and a 58 year old man giggling hysterically. I will never understand the appeal but I'm glad they had fun.
