With all the torture confessing and historical revisionism coming out of Cheney recently, it was easy to miss this little glimpse into the mind of Dead-Eye Dick.
Of course, the usual delusional-or-lying caveat applies, but either way this is simply hilarious.
Whenever Cheney or Bush are asked about their historically low approval ratings, their response is always the same -- they don't govern based on polls. They don't care about polls. Yada Yada. But in his sit-down this week with the outgoing VP, Jim Lehrer kept pressing. After getting the scripted answer (Lehrer told Cheney that he's in Dan Quayle territory), Lehrer followed up twice. And Cheney finally engaged:
MR. LEHRER: So it doesn’t trouble you at all to be leaving office next week with the overwhelming disapproval of the majority of the people, as measured by the polls? It doesn’t bother you, personally?
VICE PRES. CHENEY: I don’t buy that. No, first of all – I don’t buy that.
And Cheney explains why he doesn't really believe that he has earned "the overwhelming dissapproval of the majority of the people" and why he doesn't think the Bush presidency is viewed as a failure:
The polls change all the time; they’re easily manipulated by whoever wants to ask those poll questions; they go up; they go down.
Ah, yes, the polls they go up and they go down.
Thanks for all the laughs, Dick. See you at your war crimes trial.
