A little over eight years ago the Supreme Court issued a bizarre ruling anointing George W. Bush as president of the United States, circumventing a recount in the state of Florida. In their collective wisdom, this conservative court effectively installed a president who has failed in practically every endeavor he has attempted, and certainly failed miserably in that role.
At the time of the decision, Justice Stevens noted that: "[a]lthough we may never know with complete certainty the identity of the winner of this year's Presidential election [due to the Court's intervention to stop the recount ordered by the Florida Supreme Court], the identity of the loser is perfectly clear. It is the Nation's confidence in the judge as an impartial guardian of the rule of law." As time has passed from this decision, additional losers can also be identified. All of us, this country as a whole were all losers in this misguided decision.
We are fortunate to a chance at national redemption at this time. I could not be more excited to have Barack Obama, a leader with tremendous promise, to be taking the reigns at this moment in history.
Thank God that the Supreme Court did not get a chance to be involved with this election. Let's work with Obama and for him over the next eight years. We have a chance to recapture the spirit and promise of America. Let's make the most of it.
