ABC News is reporting that Senator Kennedy was taken from the Inaugural luncheon after suffering from convulsions.
Obviously, much of this is speculation, as it occurred during the "lights out" portion of the luncheon, but it's being reported that Senator Kennedy was suffering from convulsions and removed from the luncheon. They are also reporting that Senator Byrd, who is close to Senator Kennedy, was overcome by emotions and also removed.
They are further reporting that when Senator Kennedy was taken from the room that President Obama also left the room, apparently to see Senator Kennedy to whatever place he was taken to, to say a few encouraging words, etc.
Convulsions could be caused both by the tumor Senator Kennedy is suffering from as well as a side effect from medication he is taking.
We are all glad Senator Kennedy was able to see President Obama's inauguration, and I am sure we are also united in wishing Senator Kennedy health and further long life.
Update: President Obama is addressing the situation now--not with further information, but he is confirming the health situation and offering well wishes to Senator Kennedy and his family.
Update #2: ABC is reporting that Senator Ted Kennedy's seizure lasted at least six minutes and was still occurring as he was removed from the move. Senator Robert Byrd was removed in his wheelchair. Senator Byrd was conscious when he was taken from the room.
Update #3: The luncheon ended with a prayer and a moment of silence for Senator Kennedy. We should all do the same (to each's inclination).
Update #4: Senator Orrin Hatch is saying that Senator Kennedy was showing improvement as he was placed in the ambulance. Senators Hatch, Kerry, and Dodd were with Senator Kennedy as he was taken from the room to the ambulance. Senator Hatch is stating that Senator Kennedy was speaking when he was placed in the ambulance--a good sign but of course not a definitive one.
Final Update (I'll leave it to others--I have a parade to watch): ABC now reporting that sources at the hospital Senator Kennedy was taken to are saying Senator Kennedy is "stable and in good shape." So, hopefully that truly will be the final word, and we can go back to reveling in the Inauguration.
