Why a No vote is a No brainer for the GOP...
- They feel if business gets huge cuts that it will ramp up the economy and create more jobs. (which is bogus in the short term because it just helps them get out of the red just a bit)
- They want to send a message to the White House that the senate needs to more major changes, which may just be a bipartisan charade...
And finally the reason why we might see an all no vote in the Senate by Repubs...
- Most important, is a major political gamble on their part by being able to say republicans didn't vote for it. So when re-election comes around they can once again call Dems big spenders and get back their political image as being more responsible with the budget. Instead of siding with the Dems, they have to make a clean break and hope they work an angle on it, otherwise they look no different than Dems. If you make yourself look different enough, and the current status isn't working quick enough for the public (which it never does) then the public will lean to the other side next time. Even if they don't have a real solution either.
Even though the 1993 stimulus package was passed (with a all no vote by the GOP), and it seemed to help a bit looking back, it didn't change the fact the Repubs took back everything in 1994.
I'm predicting an all no vote by the GOP in the Senate as well. Mark my words.
- UPDATE:
I wrote this not as a concern troll, but as someone pointing out what normally happens, for those who were somehow surprised by the vote yesterday. I'm pointing out the basic politics of this so Dems can react in a way that may be able to thwart the normal gaming the Repubs do.
