I have to admit that I didn't see this coming. I was greatly anticipating tomorrow's vote for RNC Chairman. The cast of clowns in that race have proven to be highly entertaining. Unfortunately, one of the candidates has decided that he no longer wants the job.
From TPM:
Chip Saltsman, the former Tennessee GOP chairman and ex-campaign manager for Mike Huckabee, has just announced that he is withdrawing from the race to be the next RNC chairman.
Saltsman's campaign was upended when he sent a gift CD to committee members by Paul Shanklin, a right-wing comedian who plays parody songs on the Rush Limbaugh show. This CD contained a track called "Barack The Magic Negro," in which Shanklin did an Amos & Andy-style impersonation of Al Sharpton ridiculing white liberals who support Barack Obama. Saltsman blamed the flap on the media.
A survey of committee members by NBC News, published yesterday morning, showed Saltsman with the declared support of only one out of the 168 members.
Marc Ambinder is reporting that young Republicans prefer former Maryland Lt. Governor Michael Steele for the job. The details of the poll are pretty funny:
Finally, "not supporting a candidate" outranked any particular candidate, though MD Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, garnered the support of 35% of the sample, followed by Ohio's Ken Blackwell, Current RNC chairman Mike Duncan won 3% of the vote.
Tomorrow's vote should be very interesting. I have a feeling that even though Steele has the support of young Republicans, it's the older folks that call the shots in that party. I can't make a prediction of how the final vote will turn out. Steele seems like the most sane of the bunch, which is obviously a disqualifying factor. Mike Duncan has done a shitty job, but Republicans have made a habit of rewarding failure.
What do you think will happen? Also, tell me who you (as a Democrat) would like to see win.
