Republicans are now trying to go after the youth vote and minority vote unfortunately they're going after it in the wrong way. We get the first African-American president elected, they choose the first African-American chairman of their national committee. Unfortunately, young people are not dumb as they think we are. I have one thing to say that Republicans try again.
Certainly history has been made against today, we find out that the first African-American was named head of the Republican national committee. Michael Steele is a former lieutenant governor from the state of Maryland. I would like to say congratulations to him and I believe that he deserves this position. I like to say that I do not question his altercations for having a job. In 2004 he ran a very good campaign for the U.S. Senate in Maryland. And since then he has worked with many Republican organizations to elect Republicans up and down the ballot. I have to question why the Republicans selected him to run their national committee. Now there were many other very qualified individuals such as former head of the Michigan GOP Saul Anuzis.
I think they were just trying to keep up with the Democrats. It 2008 we nominated a first African-American for president of the United States. The Democrats followed suit in November by electing the first African-American president of the United States. Are Republicans trying to do this to reach out to minorities? One has to ask, is this the only way that they can get minority support? Or are they just trying to attract more young people to their party? I hope they do not believe that people in this country are stupid. The only reason public selected Michael Steele at this time was to try and keep up with Democrats. During the vote to select their new national chairman former Michigan GOP chairman Saul Anuzis was a head. By the time they took the final vote today selected Michael Steele. Once again it's not that he's not qualified is that after we elect a African-American president Republicans try to follow suit.
I think what needs to be said if this Republicans would not have a hard time getting young people to vote for them if they would support policies that young people care about. If they stop trying to turn back Roe versus Wade, if they support funding for public schools and higher education and decided to stop standing in the way of immigration reform they would likely get more support from minorities and young people. Political ploys will not for anyone or trying to keep up with someone will not make you more electable. This is something Republicans should really think about.
