The Kossacks who are commenting these days have the bit between their teeth. It's a new year, a new government, a new time for this country, and we're setting new records in individual commenting: 7,970 comments in January's 31 days of diaries. Take a bow, Arken. Or maybe the search function's gone wonky: averaging 257 comments a day must require powers beyond those of ordinary mortals. Not that Arken's completely alone: gchaucer2 wrote 5,359 comments and DemocraticLuntz 4,841 comments in the same period. If they tag-team you, Arken, you're in trouble...and so are they.
I've already listed the top three, but there are 93 99 100 109 115 117 118 120! people who have written at least 1,000 comments in January, according to the site's search tool. That's pretty amazing, especially when you consider that I've likely omitted a few people who have recently become active without my noticing. Daily Kos is a big place, so that's all too easy to do. Last January, by comparison, there were 65 people. Will we reach 100 commenters? (Later: yes, and zoom past!) I'll be updating the list if so, and said list can be found below the jump.
The Prolific Commenters is an established series: plf515 started it in 2007, and I took over at the beginning of 2008. I initially continued his monthly publication schedule as independent diaries, but switched to omnibus three and four-month versions here in Top Comments...and now we seem to be back to monthly. There's no guarantee they'll remain in Top Comments; it mostly depends whether I end up with a diary at the right time.
Today's installment counts how many comments the most frequent commenters have made in the recent months. The monthly totals are based on comments made to diaries published in that month; the way Search is set up it's easy to get complete comments to all December diaries, while highly impractical to get all comments made in December. There is minor divergence between methods, so we've gone with the one that makes the gathering of statistics feasible.
Note that due the nature of the Daily Kos Search function, indices for comments made in the past 21 days have overlap in them, causing Search to return some duplicate entries. These duplicates are counted in the totals, but eliminated in the entries it will display for you. If you've ever asked for 30 entries displayed per page, but only received 24, it's because there were six duplicates that had to be eliminated from the 30 returned. There isn't an automated way to count these duplicates and deduct them from the totals, so they're included.
I've included in this month's table all the users who attained 1,000 or more comments in January 2009 only, ordered from the most prolific to the slightly less prolific. For historical purposes, I've included the December and November 2008 numbers, the three-month totals, and the total for 2008. Note that the duplicates mentioned above will affect the January 2009 and three-month totals only.
The table columns are user name, user ID, January 2009 comments, December 2008 comments, November 2008 comments, comments made in November through January, and 2008 comments (the total for the entire year).

If you know of anyone who has been omitted, please be sure to let me know in the diary comments below. I wish I noticed everyone being active in comment writing, but past experience shows that I don't read enough of Daily Kos to see all prolific commenters being logorrheic, whether mildly or in the extreme. My apologies to anyone so omitted.
Update: adding dotalbon to the list. Update 2: adding borkitekt, Jez, litho, nonnie9999, SensibleShoes, and SingleVoter to the list. Special apologies to Jez, who was also left off the combined fall list last month; the November and December comment numbers were both high enough. Update 3: adding Clarknt67 to the list. Update 4: adding BFSkinner, Dancing Angel, David PA, eroded47095, Futuristic Dreamer, Groucho Marxist, lulu57, Onomastic, and Yasuragi to the list. Special apologies to BFSkinner, lulu57, David PA, and Yasuragi, who should also have been on last month's list: all for December loquaciousness, and first and last for November as well. Update 5: Adding corvo, Drgrishka1, heart of a quince, Johnny Rapture, LaFeminista, and soccergrandmom to the list. Update 6: Adding JerichoJ8 and MouseOfSuburbia to the list. Update 7: Adding indigoblueskies to the list. Update 8: adding bugscuffle and rfall to the list.
For those who want to check your own results, just substitute your own username for mine in the URL to check your January 2009 comments. I was reasonably prolific last month, but didn't quite make the cut. You?

It's been a busy day in the Top Comments mailbox today, which is a good thing, because your humble diarist spent far more time than he expected gathering data, and not nearly enough gathering outstanding comments. Thanks for the many who came through, sending their nominations to the Top Comments gmail address before the 9:30pm Eastern Time deadline. The actual address of our mailbox for top comments submissions is:
TopComments AT gmail DOT com
(change " AT " to "@" and " DOT " to ".")
Anyone can send great comments to our address. Be sure to include the direct link to a comment—the URL—which is available from that comment's date/time; we need that to find your choice. Please always include your Daily Kos user name in the body of your message, so we can credit you properly. As I say every time (and with good reason!), both link and username are important. If you also include a writeup, we can include that, too; if you just send the link, then you give us a chance to further exercise our creative muscles.
