I have finally settled on a favorite genre. I've decided that I like quirky autobiographical accounts of just about anything. I've just finished reading these books:
Head Case, How I Almost Lost My Mind Trying to Understand My Brain
The Art of Learning
God Grew Tired of Us
So, go below the fold for the amazing story of how the Republican Party will continue to remain in power and expand their leads in the house and Senate...
I was studying the shelves at my local Carnegie Library, when I ran into the political section. Generally, I don't read as many political books as I should. I find that much of the information is stuff I already know from reading here and other places. The book I discovered made me chuckle. I hoped someone would overhear me so that I could ridicule the book publicly. Alas, none took the bait.
One party Country: The Republican Plan for Dominance in the 21st Century is written by a couple guys from the LA Times. Tom Hamburger was even a finalist for the Pulitzer!
It was an interesting read for the first 3 pages, and then I started skipping pages, because it was just a bunch of crap. I realize that I should be slightly more nuanced when I am reviewing a fine piece of literature such as this. I should probably use words like juxtapose, weltanschauung, angst... I mean, come on people! They tried to back track a little bit in the Epilogue, but I guess there wasn't enough time to write something true. They must have started writing the book in 2004 when Republicans were still wandering in post-coital euphoria after the elections.
I don't want you to think that the guy and the other guy are anything but fine journalists, but the title alone is enough to cause me to convulse in fits of hysterical laughter.
I found an interview with Mr. Hamburger from Harper's. The interview does a pretty good overview of what he was writing about.
Here are the key points in the book:
Rove, Atwater, Reagan, Rove, Norquist, Michael Steele will win in 2006! Wednesday Meetings, Voter Vault, 1964, John McCain isn't conservative enough, in fact no conservative will have anything to do with his crawling back to the party ass, Democrats are copycats.
