I just returned from a week in Kentucky, the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was born in Hodgenville but his family had roots in the Meshack area of Cumberland County. I want to share pictures of a perfect day I spent in Meshack last Thursday.
Wikipedia says this regarding Cumberland County: http://en.wikipedia.org/...
Thomas Lincoln, father of President Abraham Lincoln lived in the Meshack Creek area of the county and served two terms as constable of Cumberland County in 1802 and 1804. He would later marry and leave Kentucky.
To get there, I drove about eight miles from where I was staying and took the Cumberland River ferry. The ferry is on a state road and operates 24/7 free.
Please drive forward, Sir.
Several miles further, I took this side road. Yes, the Meshack creek is the road! Ever hear the expression, "I couldn't get to town because the creek rose"?
I pulled in, shut the engine off, rolled down the windows to enjoy the sights and sounds, when a woman with kids passed me!
The other side is in view but boy it looks deep.
Looking back. I hope my car rental company doesn't find out about this!
I then drove to this Church in one Meshack valley to park next to the Meshack Creek.
I spent three/four hours walking along this area of the creek.
Here's a picture of my fossil and petrified finds. Also a couple of horse shoes and a hand made marble. Could they have belonged to Thomas Lincoln?
My favorite find and I have no idea what it is.....
I then said good bye to my new made friends and headed back.
It was a perfect day! Happy Birthday President Lincoln!
