Having recently read about the huge increase in the publication and popularity of books about how to be happy, I thought I'd jump on that joyful bandwagon myself. So here are Senior Citizen's six secrets of happiness:
- Remember to eat. You may be one of the privileged people on this planet with sufficient food, but it won't do you any good if you forget to eat it.
- Use your delete button to avoid fundraising appeals. That will not only help keep your spirits up, but will also ensure you have enough money for food. Set up regular automatic donations to the causes you care about, and then when you're not advocating for them, you can put them out of your mind without forgetting them.
(continued after the fold)
- Get a little clicker-counter to put in your pocket and click it every time you smile and exchange greetings with someone. After each thousandth time you've smiled and said "Hi, how are you?," greet the next person you meet with a frown and say, "Buzz off." Then reset the clicker. Some may be offended, but the ones you've always smiled at will crack up and so will you, thus adding to the happiness quotient of both of you.
- Read every book that Janet Evanovich has ever published and every new one that comes out.
- Do the impossible. You may not succeed, but you'll have much more fun trying than you'll have by limiting yourself to things that are possible.
- Never read anything about how to be happy--it will only serve to remind you that you're not.
