Now that the election is over, and Obama is officially putting his plans into motion, I thought now would be a good time to write out why I am a Demorat rather than a Republican. And the reasons are as follows:
When I look for a political party, I mainly look for four things:
- Which party will most promote intellectualism and scientific progress?
Both parties have supported this over the course of history, but I believe the Democrats have had an edge for the last 40 years or so.
- Which party will do the best to improve our economy and grow the GNP?
Again, at various points in time, both parties have had a claim to this, but our economy grew much more with FDR and Clinton than Hoover and the Bushes.
- Which party will realize that trying to prohibit 'bad behavior' is counter productive, and that taxing something that you don't like is better than wasting gobs of money funding a federal agency to prevent it?
This has always been the Democrats, with the possible expection of the Goldwater Republicans.
- Which party will set a cohesive foreign policy, without falling into the traps of militarism, protectionism or complacency?
The Republicans have already fallen into the trap of militarism, I'm willing to give the Democrats a shot again.
So those are the reasons I am a Democrat, and I hope you are too. Probably, considering that you've found your way to this site.
