I graduated from a top-notch university in my home country with a degree in engineering.
I attended graduate school at a major American university on a student visa.
After graduate school, with my allowed one year extension, I took a job as a postdoctoral researcher at another major American university. And to prepare for the year ending, I had two choices: apply for an H1B visa ...
... or adjust my status to Permanent Resident based on my marriage to an American citizen.
OK, so it turns out that in my case, there wasn't really a problem. While in graduate school, I fell in love with a beautiful American woman who became my wife more than three years ago. The whole application cost me about $2000 (without lawyers) and after about 4 months I was granted Permanent Resident status. Now I can stay in this country worry free, continue my research, spend money, and pay taxes.
My point is this: there are a lot of people in situations similar to mine who are not married to US citizens and get H1B status so that they can also stay in this country worry free, continue their research, spend their money, and pay their taxes.
I realize that people are losing their jobs right now, and I feel awful about it. And my family is not immune to the effects either.
I just want to say that people here on H1B visas are not the problem.
