Her brutal murder took place last April, and since then a tide of violence against lesbian women in South Africa has continued to rise. Human rights campaigners say it is characterised by what they call "corrective rape" committed by men behind the guise of trying to "cure" lesbian women of their sexual orientation.

This is what  our religious zealots and right wingnuts really mean when they talk about corrective therapy.

"Every day I am told that they are going to kill me, that they are going to rape me and after they rape me I'll become a girl," said Zakhe Sowello from Soweto, Johannesburg.

I recommend watching the video in the link, these views can be heard in the US just as clearly if a little less publicly, and would be more often stated if the vile right-wing had their wish. If only you were fucked [raped] by a 'real' man you would know how wonderful it is, once you had left A&E that is.

First they hint that sexuality is a choice, the only choice being is to go with what is natural to you, then they suggest 'treatment'.

Then some crack pots make pornographic documentaries films like 'Lesbian Rape from She Stole My Voice' the sole aim of which appears to be to discuss rape interspersed with videos designed to 'turn on' and generate hate amongst the targeted viewers. That is why I call it pornography.

However the facts are clear.

The global statistics on sexual assault against women are shocking. At least one in every five women experiences rape or attempted rape during her lifetime.1 The recently published report from the United Nations Population Fund on the State of the World Population 2000 is the latest of many official reports that have documented the size of the problem.2 Yet despite clear documentation and the fact that much attention has been paid to the issue of sexual violence against women at international level, the problem is getting worse.

'Corrective' rape is just another justification for this age old abuse, just like 'but you were dressed/acted in a way that justified your rape' has often been used in the courts to clear rapists.

Fact #10: Factoring in unreported rapes, about 5% - one out of twenty - of rapists will ever spend a day in jail. 19 out of 20 will walk free. (Probability statistics based on US Department of Justice Statistics)

Lets keep the facts where they really are, any form of rape is a human rights abuse no matter what the perceived justification might be, that is why statements such as 'corrective rape'...

Even the term "corrective rape" itself helps compound the problem. The term "corrective" tends to "reinforce the myth that something can be corrected and that lesbianism is a choice," said Evelynne Moses of the Rape Crisis centre in Athlone.  The idea that sexuality is a choice is widely held in many of the areas where "corrective rape" is a significant problem

are so terrifying, and you can hear versions of it anywhere in the world.

We don't choose our sexuality and we don't need corrective rape therapy.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
