A document that outlined the reasons for the dissolution of a puppet government changed the world. It outlined not only the grievances against this puppet government and it's creator, but also what it considered the most basic truths.
This 'socialist rhetoric' was the basis for a great experiment gone bad; It's become what it sought to overthrow.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. —
While it's not the 'English language' we're accustomed to, it's pretty clear as to what it says.
It begins with the abstract concept of the rights of the people, as opposed to the rights of a select few. That the purpose of government is to use it's power's to enable all of it's inhabitants, without exception. Government power is the product of the people it serves.
It follows with it's justification, that when a government abandons these principles, it must be dumped and replaced. It acknowledges that this should not be done lightly - That we're inclined to put up with 'necessary evils' rather than abolish them. But when those necessary evils become detrimental to the most basic principles, it's your DUTY to replace it.
Our government now claims that the necessary evils are tying their hands. That the power given to it by it's citizens is insufficient to offset the power of the necessary evil. The abuses and usurpations are a product of contract law, and that is inviolable.
As our world evolves, so must our understanding of which evils are necessary, and which are not. I've started writing a 21st century Declaration of Independence, and suggest that you write one too. The list of abuses and usupations is long, and the solutions to these won't come without sacrifice. But the alternative is the same as it was when Jefferson penned this foundational document.
