Greetings from Portland, Oregon. For this weekend's entry in LaughingPlanet's travel series, I'm gonna go for another walk around the city with my camera. This time I'm going to stay around my way, and focus on some of my favorite neighborhoods here in Southeast Portland.
My earlier entry in this series can be found here. A list of past and future entries can be found at the end of this diary. Also, we need volunteers for future installments! If you'd like to do so, contact LaughingPlanet. Photos or not, just a write-up on your city or region or favorite place, as brief or as in-depth as you'd like. Share your world with us!
Anyways - a whole bunch of pics, ramblings and shameless restaurant and food cart plugs below the fold...
SE Portland encompasses the neighborhoods east of the Willamette River, from the industrial areas just across the water from downtown all the way out to the city limits; and south of East Burnside Street to the Clackamas County line. I spend most of my time here wandering around inside the 30's, pretty much between Belmont / Morrison and Powell; although sometimes I'll occasionally venture out into the 60's and 70's, along Foster, or head down into Woodstock. Beautiful homes and block after block of locally-owned independent businesses. Great people, great parks, a dozen or so community gardens. My food co-op, which is also home to Portland's only year-round weekly farmers market. And of course, this being Portland and all, a number of really great brewpubs. Hopworks Urban Brewery, the all-organic Roots Brewing Company, The Lucky Lab, and tiny Clinton Street Brewing, which is attached to one of our many brewpub-theaters, the Clinton Street Theater.
On to the pics...
Let's first leave my apartment for a cup of Stumptown Coffee from the cool little shop down the block, and then a quick stroll through my neighborhood park before moving on...
Okay, let's take a bus up to Belmont. Belmont's a mixture of beautiful old homes with a few clusters of businesses and great cafes along the way, walking down from 39th Avenue towards the river. The closer-in you get, the more common larger apartment buildings become. Along the way, you'll also pass Colonel Summers Park, home to one of our many community gardens.
Wandering down Belmont, and eventually cutting a few blocks down to Hawthorne:
Leaving there, and heading down along 11th & 12th Avenues, skirting Ladd's Addition, home to many rose gardens during the summer, and turning onto Division Street -
Division Street in the Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood has a few clusters of great little cafes and restaurants, from very affordable to very fancy. There are also a few really cool little food carts (great blog, check that one out!) along the way, including a slightly out of the way cart where you can grab some excellent waffles for lunch. My favorite place along Division to grab a quick, healthy affordable meal is at Papa G's. One of the coolest little shops in Portland is also along the way, Mirador Community Store.
Closing today's trip out, a few pics from Woodstock Boulevard, the main strip through the Woodstock neighborhood. Another cool area with a large number of locally-owned businesses, shops, cafes, and the independent hardware store I frequent on many occasions. The neighborhood is also adjacent to Reed College, and its beautiful grounds and buildings in the wealthy residential Eastmoreland neighborhood.
I have to do a Tour of the Roses photo diary here later this year, along with an Edible Lawns Portland one as well...
