OAKLAND, Calif. — The parolee who shot five Oakland police officers Saturday, killing three and gravely wounding another, was hiding inside his sister’s nearby apartment, where he ultimately was shot dead himself.
And neighbors knew it. But no one told police for nearly an hour. If neighbors had spoken up sooner, said one woman who lives nearby, some of those lives might have been saved. But in East Oakland, lamented the woman, Elaine, who refused to give her last name, that just doesn’t happen.
"I’ve been crying all day. It makes you feel bad," she said. "But you just don’t want to be a snitch. The word, ‘snitch,’ it’s almost worse than murderer."

. On Saturday, about 20 people lingered at the scene of the first shooting, taunting police.
Yikes! Now, why is it that people in Oakland do not snitch on a cold blooded killer, and taunt cops? What could it be?
Could it be a long long history of Oakland cops killing people?

Grant, an apprentice butcher at an Oakland grocery store, is lying face down on the platform with his hands behind his back. He pleads for mercy, appealing that he has a four-year-old daughter. One cop has his knee on Grant’s neck when Mehserle pulls out his gun and shoots Grant pointblank in the back.
Oakland’s black Democratic Party mayor Ron Dellums and an assortment of preachers and elected officials are trying to put a lid on the outrage that has ignited among the black and Latino populations of Oakland, whose youth have long been on the receiving end of police terror. Dellums, who made it his priority to put more cops on Oakland streets, appealed for "peace" and offered condolences. This is pure cynicism. When Dellums’ cops killed 20-year-old Gary King Jr. in September 2007, the mayor locked the door to City Hall against King’s aggrieved family and friends.
The body count of those killed by the Oakland cops since Dellums took office has continued to mount: 15-year-old José Luis Buenrostro-Gonzalez, shot and killed in broad daylight, March 2008; 71-year-old Casper Banjo, a black artist, killed the same month for having a toy gun; 27-year-old Mack "Jody" Woodfox, gunned down, August 2008.

A historic death of an activist killed by Oakland cops.

Rosebud Abigail Denovo (born Laura Marie Miller) (? - d. August 25, 1992) was a 20 year old street activist who had previously been involved during the 1991 riots at People's Park in Berkeley, California. She was arrested and released after police allegedly found gunpowder at a campsite she shared with a boyfriend in the Berkeley hills. She was pending trial on those charges at the time of her death.[1]
On August 25, 1992, Denovo broke into the residence of Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien on the UC Berkeley campus at 5:50 am, triggering a silent alarm that summoned the University of California Police Department (UCPD), who escorted Tien and his wife safely off the premises. The UCPD then sent five Oakland Police Department officers and dogs into the house, and the officers shot and killed Denovo after she allegedly lunged at them with a hunting knife. Though the hunting knife was in her possession, the police version remains highly controversial. The autopsy indicated that at least one of the bullets entered her from the back, but that could have happened when she was trying to attack another officer.
Denovo's killing triggered further protests as some believed that the police entry was contrary to customary police procedure. Normal procedure when an armed, disturbed person is in a house, but not endangering anyone, is to negotiate with the person from the outside. Some felt that the police had to act because Denovo did not communicate after breaking into the house. People also criticized the UCPD and the OPD because the officer who shot Denovo had been the subject of previous citizen complaints alleging excessive force, but jurisprudence does not allow past actions to be used as evidence against current action. While many complained and protested, no one could ever prove police misconduct.
Interesting article with a note about Rosebud's killing.

HIM: No, I know. Because it was my buddy who did it.
ME: Your buddy? Are you saying a friend of yours killed Rosebud?

The perpetrator, 20-year-old Tyler Peterson, who was a full-time deputy in the Forest County Sheriff's Department and a part-time officer at the Crandon Police Department, shot and killed six people and critically injured a seventh before committing suicide.[3] One of the victims, 18-year-old Jordanne Michele Murray, was Peterson's former girlfriend, and it was believed the dispute within the apartment motivated the shooting.
