Color me skeptical but the latest faux outrage populism leaves me cold. It is incredibly insincere and manufactured for TV. It's the equivalent of the Hills. The sight of Tina Brown, Arianna Huffington, Maureen Dowd, Tom Friedman, and Frank Rich carrying pitchforks on behalf of us "little" people should lead folks to double over with uncontrollable laughter.
Are these the people who are going to lead the impending "uprising." Oh the humanity, the humanity. Next they'll be appointing Chuck Todd as the minister of information for the upcoming revolution. It's all too much! Maureen, Arianna, and Tina are taking valuable time away from attending NYC Fashion Week to write new manifestos in support of the working-class? Is this for real?
Does no one else find this beyond belief? What has the revolution come to? Back in '68 the Last Poets told us that the "Revolution Would Not Be Televised." Well in 2009, it seem that the entire revolution is taking place on Morning Joe.
Watching Arianna Huffington and Tina Brown channeling populist "rage" is excrutiating but also pathetic. It's populist rage chic and I find all of this personally offensive. I have spent a lifetime organizing in communities of color with little support and even less resources.
The new members of the poutrage club don't look like me, they don't live like me, and they certainly do not speak for me. In fact, I find all of this incredibly suspicious -- populist rage is now mainstream?
Al Giordano has called it like he sees it for years now. Most recently he characterized this phenomenon as illustrative of a new faux populist left -- cue the outraged comments [here]. My outrage du jour qoutient is already used up while elite (overwhelmingly white) pundits continue to act a fool, the rest of us have decided how to aportion blame for the ginned up AIG bonus controversy.
Enough -- these elite (overwhelmingly white) pundits do not speak for me. They've jumped the shark and have no credibility. They remind me of college students who take a spring break trip to Guatemala and return to "educate" the rest of us about the plight of indigenous people. They are condescending, shrill, and uninformed. They are the equivalent of cultural interlopers taking a short vacation to an "exotic" place.
P.S. The incomparable Al Giordano takes out a can of whoop ass on another complementary front. Thanks Al for being so courageous and always speaking truth to power. Get ready for the onslaught that you are inviting with these words.
