According to The Union Leader the New Hampshire House of Representatives has just passed Gay Marriage with a narrow margin.
The New Hampshire House narrowly passed a bill today that would allow gay couples to marry.
The final vote on HB 556 was 186-179, and came after nearly three hours of debate.
The bill now moves to the Senate.
Those who pushed for passage of the bill said it was a matter of equal rights and that it will bring an end to discrimination against homosexuals. They said the state’s civil unions law, passed in 2007, is not the equivalent of marriage.
there's more...
HB 436 is now headed to the Senate where Democrats have a 14-9 majority (with one vacancy). Even if Democrats lose a couple of votes, I suspect the bill will still be headed to Governor Lynch's desk. In the past Lynch, a Democrat, has expressed opposition to gay marriage. From the same Union Leader article:
Gov. John Lynch does not support same-sex marriage. His press secretary Colin Manning said, "The civil unions bill he signed into law prevents discrimination and provides the same legal protections to all New Hampshire families to the extent that is possible under federal law."
Someone needs to tell Governor Lynch that a civil union is not the same thing as marriage. Separate is not equal. Contact Governor Lynch here and let him know what you think. The governor doesn't have to sign the law if he personally believes in discrimination. He can simply let the bill sit on his desk and become law without his signature.
