I'm a big NPR fan, but today they have me puzzled. The speculation that "The Wizard of Oz" is really a story about 19th century monetary policy has been around for a while, but today it took a bizarre turn.
Today's guest suggests that, if cast in modern terms, Sarah Palin is our modern Dorothy.
What character really is Sarah Palin in reality? Join me on the flip.
First off, this is not my usual sort of topic. Most of the time I'm happy to just laugh quietly at all the conservative drivel.
For some reason this set me off. I'm almost entirely immune to Rush, and O'Liely, and the others, because getting mad at such ignorance just means that they have managed to steal some small part of my time. You don't blame the bacteria for the infection, you just treat it and move on.
So here is the story: Sarah Palin as Dorothy
Now, in my humble opinion we need some corrections. After all, we are not in Kansas any more. We've evolved.
First, Saran Palin is not at all like Dorothy. She's more like the Wicked Witch of the East-a trivial character who gets mushed under the solid institution of our democracy.
So who is Dorothy? I think it's us.
The Wizard? Well, at the moment I'd have to go with Obama. He offers some challenges and asks a lot of us at times, but still has the power to lift us out of our hardships and bring us home.
Wicked Witch of the West? Ann Coulter? Or is she too trival to be such a dangerous character?
It's open metaphor time, people. Who do you see as the modern parallels to the Wizard of Oz characters?
