I have decided that Michael Steele totally rocks. The endless stream of humor provided by the RNC Chairman has been priceless and daily. However, that may all be coming to an end. The Washington Times, a conservative paper, is reporting that RNC members are demanding that Michael Steele call a special session of the full committee. This is significant because it is only at a session of the full committee that a vote of no-confidence, or an ouster, can take place. The fact that these meetings are rare is what made a lot of people decide that Steele wouldn't be ousted despite a never-ending series of gaffes.
It would seem some Republicans are not happy at all about losing NY-20, a race that they should have won given the initial advantages.
The stated-purpose of the demand revolves around the stimulus and whether or not Steele should be going after GOP-defections Specter/Snowe/Collins, rather than his current position(flip-flopping like a fish out its comfort zone). However, Ben Smith at the Politico seems to also sense what I sense;
The content, though, seems less relevant than the threat that an extraordinary meeting could lead to a no-confidence vote or an ouster.
Make no mistake about it, it's the fact that these meetings are rare that has kept Steele reassured that he won't be ousted. From the Washington Times article;
In a conference call Wednesday with Ken McKay, Mr. Steele's newly named chief of staff, the conservative critics set a deadline of 5 p.m. Friday for Mr. Steele to agree to a special meeting of the full committee to be held next month.
If he doesn't call the special meeting, they said, they have the requisite signatures of members from 16 states to force a full committee meeting May 20 at National Harbor outside Washington, where a smaller gathering of state party chairmen is already scheduled.
The Washington Times article itself is worth reading, only because they continually make implicit suggestions that the meeting is not being called to discuss "stimulus politics", despite that being the stated-reason for the resolution to force a full committee meeting.
It'll be a shame to lose Mr. Steele as Chairman of the Clown National Committee. I mean, Republican National Committee..
