One of the reasons many think that Dan Mongiardo will be a great candidate both for the primary, and general elections for Kentucky's Senate seat in 2010 is his position and name recognition. As Kentucky's sitting Lt. Governor he has shown an appeal to voters all over the state. Also, many state and national Democrats remember when he almost pulled a monumental upset over Bunning in 2004.
Despite his naysayers, Mongiardo has gotten off to a very good start in this race with his fundraising haul over the last month or so:
FRANKFORT — In a letter to supporters, Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo said Monday that he has raised $420,000 in the first six weeks of his second bid to unseat U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning, R-KY.
Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo, who narrowly lost to Bunning in 2004, said his ability to raise cash " is a significant statement on the strength of our campaign." The money was raised between mid February and March 31, Mongiardo said.

As many have suspected, Mongiardo is showing strength in his fundraising numbers and is in a great position to win the nomination and general elections. Now, Democrats await seeing who will be his competition in the primary:
Mongiardo’s announcement of his fund raising prowess came as a Democratic challenger to Mongiardo is likely to be announced soon. Democrats that may enter the primary include Attorney General Jack Conway, State Auditor Crit Luallen and U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler, D-Versailles.
While I am waiting to see who else enters this race to endorse a candidate, whomever wants to challenge Dr. Dan better step up pretty quick to keep him from getting much more of a head start.
