I believe the symbolic importance of this cannot be underestimated. More after the fold...
(oh, and will delete if already diaried)
FYI, a Seder is the ceremonial dinner feast of Passover, one of the most important Jewish holidays. It celebrates the Jewish exodus from Egypt, their freedom from slavery, the years-long journey through the desert to the Holy Land.
Many historians and theologians believe that Jesus' Last Supper was, in fact, a Passover Seder - which partly explains why Easter and Passover fall around the same time of year.
From HuffPo:
Thursday night, the president and his family will be marking the beginning of Passover, inviting friends and aides over for a White House Seder.
Considering Sy Hersh's recent revelation that Cheney and his cronies were trash-talking Obama to Netanyahu, saying he was 'pro-palestinian', this seems like a strong refutation of all that claptrap nonsense.
Or maybe now they'll say he's not only a secret Muslim, but also...a secret Jew!
It's also interesting to me that I've been watching MSNBC all day (my worst habit), and haven't heard a peep about it. IMO, it is a wonderful gesture by President Obama. Because it is the first White House Seder, it's also quite historic.
Cheers, and shalom.
