Check out Grit TV with Laura Flanders today; she's got the story of the warehouse workers in California's Inland Empire. They have key jobs in the hub of the global economy, unloading, sorting, repackaging and shipping goods that are now manufactured in China so they end up on the shelves of Walmarts and Targets and Home Depots across the nation.
Most of these "new economy" jobs that have replaced manufacturing jobs are temp jobs with low pay and no benefits. These jobs sucked when times were bad, but now that the economy has slowed down, there are tens of thousands of temp warehouse workers with no work and no unemployment benefits, stuck in desperate situations.
The Inland Empire now has the highest unemployment rate and among the highest foreclosure rates in the nation, while Walmart is enjoying record profits.
That's why we need the Employee Free Choice Act so warehouse workers can unite and negotiate better wages, affordable health care, and fulltime jobs.
