It is now time to put our radical right wing friends to the test. The American people should allow Texas, Alaska and Georgia to develop a legal process to secede from the United States. Based on historical precedent, the fairest process would be a plebiscite (remember that from the Treaty of Versailles). For such a important act, you really cannot expect that a simple majority would suffice. It would have to be two thirds or three fourths. However, knowing my right wing foes, they would never agree to such a referendum "because they might lose." Thus, some powerful minority in their respective states would create secessionist governments.
And like those who fermented our 19th century Civil War, they will have to accept the consequences of such an action. They will have to realize that the Federal Government and the citizens of the other 47 states will do everything in their power to put down this act of treason. The only reason the Confederacy had some measure of success was because the insurgent states were contiguous and contained people who had a strong militarist tradition--i.e., some very amazing generals. On the other hand, Lincoln's Federal government was not at all ready for the insurgency--militarily or politically.
However, this time around our present government has the means and will to end a secessionist movement rather swiftly. First off, there are probably a majority of people in all these states, at present, who want to remain Americans and who would act as a fifth column with a little help from our various intelligence agencies (think what the Free French did during World War II). A little dynamite goes a long way in destroying a state's infrastructure of secondary roads, bridges, tunnels, highways, railroads and airports. Then the Feds will soften them up a little more by having a complete embargo of all goods entering or leaving these respective states. Think of what happened to Iraq's economy under Clinton's embargo.) I wonder how people would react when real food shortages come. You can't eat cotton, tobacco or oil. I doubt any right wing militias would stand up for long when our military with tanks, armored vehicles and some very powerful weapons come crossing into their states. History shows that revolutions fail when you do not have the vast majority of people behind you. And sometimes you fail even when you do, i.e., the attempted revolutions of 1848 in Europe. It would not be very long before these insurgent governments collapse and their leaders are arrested as traitors. By the way, the leaders should be grateful that Obama is president because I am sure he will be like Lincoln with malice toward none. Otherwise, they might all one day have a visit with a military firing squad. Oh, how I remember several years ago when they called the Democrats traitors who should be executed.
One other thing, when the forces of reaction do succeed, it is only in the short run. Metternich in 1815 only succeeded for a little while in stemming the forces of freedom. By the end of the 19th century, most Western European countries had more or less constitutional governments, universal suffrage and a good measure of free expression. What are the goals of these reactionaries? Allowing 1% of America's richest to keep their tax cuts, preventing the unemployed from getting decent unemployment insurance, not allowing a tax cut for 95% of Americans, not allowing Federal funds to come into the state so that government employees do not lose their jobs, not allowing Federal funds from coming into their states to build roads, bridges, and to develop green jobs. Basically, the radical right proposes a revolution to allow most people to work against their own economic and political interests.
