The shops are abandoned; inside this million dollar terminal it seems like Europe, yet just outside mud brick hovels spread out like trees and poverty afflicts the streets. The tourists have abandoned this nation; the second poorest on earth, driven out by excessive and punitive taxation levied by the ex-communist President Ortega, in order to line his pockets.
With a 60% poverty rate and a drowning economy, Nicaragua is a nation teetering on the edge of collapse. It doesn't help that the ex-Sandinista rebel that presides as President is chasing out foreign investors and spending state funds on losing international court suits that involve islands long inhabited by other countries.
This man who prefers to salute and honor dead terrorists over actually helping his people is Daniel Ortega, ex-Sandinista reel and ex-President of Nicaragua. He fancies changing the constitution to allow himself be re-elected for life.
Meanwhile in the streets many die each day. From the violence that runs rampant, to hunger as millions live in poverty, to heart-brokenness, as they see their nation fall further through the cracks.
