I think that we have allowed ourselves to get a little too cocky these past six months to the point where we think Dem majorities will last forever.
Georgia 10's essay yesterday was a bittersweet read:
Sure, we mock. But it's a time to mourn. The grand Republican machine that roared in the 1980s and 1990s is sputtering into the 21st century, shuddering and clanking along as it runs on the fumes of failed ideology.
Farewell, our once worthy opponent. Farewell.
And good riddance.
Now don't get me wrong: It was funny. And it drove home the point that the libertarians and "constitutionalists" are not friends on the GOP's Facebook page. Who among us could have imagined, back in those dark days of 2003, 2004, that we'd be where we are right now? I certainly couldn't.
The diary is a nice snapshot of where the GOP is at this point in time.
BUT...
Only a snapshot. Of this point in time.
The GOP is wounded certainly. But dead? Gone? Completely impotent?
No way.
The Republican party is Dracula. In more ways than one. Not only do they suck the blood out of anyone or anything that's good and wholesome, they keep coming back.
And think about this: Who's gone out of the party? The moderates, mostly.
While that's good in that the ones left are the most ideologically driven idiots, they are also the most tenacious fighters, the ones with the backing from Rush and Co.
If there's one thing that we should take from GWB and MC Rove, it's this: the party is should always be campaigning. Always.
Remain active. Whether fighting for gay marriage, choice, off-season races in your area, always keep fighting. Complacency will kill us.
When I see the body of the GOP elephant dead, head cut off from neck, lying in the grave, coffin nailed shut, six of dirt piled high, maybe...maybe at that time, I will believe they're dead.
Until then...2010 looms... as does 2012.
People, it's STILL no time for complacency.
