Just a quick note to let you know that my book, The Uprising, is being released in paperback today. You can buy it at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, the Tattered Cover or your local independent bookstore.
When The Uprising was first published in the Spring of 2008, it predicted that the burgeoning populist revolt on both the left and right would soon consume national politics. Though the book scratched and clawed its way onto the New York Times bestseller list for a week (thanks in no small part to support from readers like DailyKos's), it's message was a tough sell a year ago. Frankly, the media wasn't interested in populism, thinking it was just some far-fetched theory.
Now, of course, as the book is released this week in paperback, the book's prediction of a populist uprising has come true, and I think the book therefore has even more relevance today. Populism is being talked about everywhere - on the cover of Newsweek magazine, at tea parties across the country and in debates over the Obama administration's policies.
The Uprising traces the historical roots of populism and why it is such a powerful force in national politics today. The book also traces the age-old efforts to thwart populism (which I discuss in my latest newspaper column this week). The book includes a whole chapter on the Netroots and YearlyKos/Netroots Nation.
I hope if you haven't picked up the hard cover of The Uprising, that you'll now pick up a copy of the paperback. I think you will enjoy it, and find it all the more relevant today.
REVIEWS:
"The author weaves entertaining case studies, keeping his tone conversational, the narrative fast-paced, and the content accessible…this book presents a rousing account of the local uprisings already in effect."
- Publishers Weekly
"The Uprising is a hard book to dislike or dismiss. Sirota reports cleverly and in pleasing detail about a complex world of political conflict that the journalistic throng obsessed with presidential candidates and their handlers seldom notices...He may not have the Establishment quaking in its Guccis, but his always energetic, often ironic reporting certainly made the quest worthwhile." - Washington Post
"David Sirota is honest, uncompromising, passionate, and a brilliant communicator. He is the most important progressive voice we have in this country. THE UPRISING should be read by anyone who wants to understand exactly how the ordinary person has been sold out by the political system."
- Matt Taibbi, national political correspondent for Rolling Stone and author of The Great Derangement
"David Sirota is a clearheaded and principled hell-raiser for economic justice. More like him and we’ll have a real uprising on our hands."
- Naomi Klein, author of No Logo and The Shock Doctrine
"After so many decades of fake populism, could we finally be looking at the real thing? In this compelling book, rooted in history but as contemporary as this morning’s newspaper, David Sirota gives us reason to hope."
- Thomas Frank, author of What’s the Matter with Kansas?
