I have a confession to make. I am a 47 year old male, husband, father of two, and a...
Girlfriend.
At least I was until Noon today.
After broadcasting on WGN AM Radio 720 for over 20 years, Kathy and Judy announced at the beginning of their show this morning that they had been canceled and that today was their last show. And I am really, really sad.
It may be hard to understand unless you are from the Chicago area, but they became part of my family, as did all of the other long time radio personalities who broadcasted from the Tribune Building over the course of my 47 years and who are now gone from the airwaves. Like their former colleagues at WGN Radio, Kathy and Judy were special, pleasant, funny, nice, entertaining, small town, and all uniquely Chicago.
Besides always making me laugh out loud, what I really liked about Kathy and Judy was that they were progressive, disdained George W. Bush, and didn't hesitate in saying so. For years, it seemed like they were the lone progressive voices on the airwaves in Chicago. And I listened and felt not so alone.
Kathy and Judy now join Wally, Bozo, Cookie, Frasier, Garfield Goose, Uncle Bobby, Cuddly Dudley, Spike, and Chelveston the Duck, in the Chicago cultural history books. Chicago will be a little less like Chicago tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
Thank you Kathy and Judy. I will miss you greatly.
