I just had an awesome experience, deep in heart of "Bush Country."
You know that someone has reached true superstar status in America when the public drops their last name and just refers to them, for example, as "Magic," or "Micheal, or "Rosie," or whatever.
Just now, at an undisclosed wedding location in the heart of Tejas, I showed a 40- or 50-something white woman (mother of the bride) our dressing room. As she was leaving, one of her friends noticed her beautiful dress and said:
"How beautiful, you look just like Michelle!"
I hadn't noticed that the dress was sleeveless, so I wondered immediately if this a friend she was talking about, or...could it be?
Oh, it be!
The woman in the sleeveless dress turned to her friend, flexed her muscles and said "I have the right to bare arms" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, folks, in deep red of heart of Texas, here was one white woman who knew she only needed to say one name and her friend would know who she meant, and another white woman who took the comparison as the highest compliment!
(Sorry for those who think i'm obsessing that they were white women, but this is Texas, where racism is still the rule not the exception, which made this an incredible moment.)
Update:
Well, it turns out these are not exactly your typical Texans. When i told the mom she made my day with the comment, she said "I love that woman." (!)
And when the rehearsal started, the minister was a very young woman!
Still, with all the bullshit on the news that portrays us as a nation divided, i love seeing evidence that we are coming together, even in Texas, of all places. These are truly days to remember.
The times they are surely a-changin'.
