So they voted for Prop 8 because they "believe in the Bible," eh? They insist "marriage" is between a man and a woman because that's what the Bible says, right? I think it's time to get serious about this.
If gay marriages aren't "real" marriages because they don't conform to the Bible, how about those 2nd, 3rd and 4th hetero marriages? Jesus said that to remarry is "adultery." How about those marriages entered into when both partners were not virgins? Grounds for annulment, according to the Bible.
I think it's time to bring the Bible back into "marriage" after all.
I propose this: an initiative drive in every state establishing two separate designations for legal unions:
- Domestic Partnership, which would give all the rights and responsibilities current marriages do, and be available to same-sex couples also
- Covenant Marriage, which would grant all of the above, but remove no-fault divorce, be accessible only to virgins (would bring back the old "does anyone present know of any reason.."), and would be a one-time shot. (Meaning, you could only enter a covenant marriage once, unless the former spouse is deceased, or the former marriage was found to be fraudulent and thus annulled by the state.)
All current marriages would legally revert to "Domestic Partnership" status. First-marriage couples wishing the biblical designation of "marriage" would have to apply for a Covenant Marriage license, which would remove no-fault divorce. Thereafter, proof of adultery, sexual assault on anyone, and sexual harassment would remove Convent Marriage status even if the couple chose to stay together.
Naturally, this would never pass. But can you imagine the hilarity in splitting the right-wing on the matter? One small contingent would support it, for all the reasons they give for opposing gay marriage. But we all know that most sanctimonious right-wingers are hypocrites. Watching John McCain and Newt and Rush and Ghouliani and Diaper Dave have to introduce their spouses as their domestic partner... ah, delish.
Forcing the sanctimonious right wing (including the LDS Church) to come out against Covenant Marriage would be worth all the effort. Because if they did so, it would destroy every last biblical argument they've ever used against gay couples wishing to marry.
