The hell with that crap.
Only Obama can go to Cairo.
So many things said in this speech by an American President were jaw-dropping.
Progressives and those further to the left will think that much of what was said amounted to "Fucking duh" and to an extent they have a point -- if all you care about is the truth.
If you actually want to change something, this speech was breath-taking.
Much of the criticism I've read stated that Obama didn't take a harder line on this or that - most notably, a harder line against Arab authoriatarian states, Israeli settlements, and Palestinian violence.
With all due respect, those who say so are missing the point, which is to engage everyone in respectful, hopeful dialogue, not make righteous pronouncements. Doing good is our job. Leave righteousness up to $DEITY of your choice.
That being said, WOW.
There is so much here that has not been said by a sitting American President -- and the fact that he is actually in office makes a huge difference -- official communiques, statements by secretaries of state, or ex-presidents, none carry anything like the same weight.
Others have already pointed out the reference to US intereference in Iranian democracy. The assassination of Mossadeq, the Iranian prime minister, by the CIA, was one of the more shameful incidents of the Cold War, and by putting the Shah in power, ultimately provoked the Iranian Revolution which was subverted / converted by Islamic hardliners, similar to the way the Bolsheviks subverted the Russian Revolution.
"Palestine" -- referring to Palestine as a nation that needs to exist is new.
"60 years" -- this puts the scope of the Israeli-Palestinian problem in the Palestinian, not Israeli, frame, beginning in 1948 with the creation of Israel, not 1967 with the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. No, there won't be any return of lands within the original 1948 borders, but simply framing the problem in those terms makes it possible to talk about a solution that may possibly work.
"Holy Qu'ran" -- No other President, ever, has been able to quote Islamic scripture so fluidly, so comfortably, so appropriately.
.....I could go on...and on...and on....what are your best bits?
