The big political story of today, barring any breaking news, is going to be the competitive Democratic primary in Virginia to determine who will take on Republican Attorney General Bob McDonnell in November.
Very early reports indicate a light turnout. Other anecdotal reports mostly concur, with reports of light activity in most places, particularly in vote-rich Northern Virginia.
The reason for a flagging NoVa turnout may well be meteorological: National Weather Service forecasts for Northern Virginia are calling for severe thunderstorms after 3 PM today. This is particularly vexing for candidates relying on the NoVa vote (read: Brian Moran), because another major storm cell blew through the area right after polls opened this morning. This almost assuredly slowed down turnout this morning. Any voters who elected to wait until the evening to vote may find themselves faced with inclement weather, as well.
A couple of late indicators hinted that a suppressed turnout might benefit Creigh Deeds. Tom Jensen of PPP even went to the trouble of altering their final polling numbers to account for widely varying degrees of turnout. SurveyUSA also found that Deeds has a 12-point lead among committed voters.
That said, the best sources of information are always those closest to the action. With that in mind, Virginia Kossacks, feel free to check in. What are you seeing and hearing this primary day??
