Note: the title is meant to be sarcastic.
I don't know why the left gets so defensive when the right drums up their fake outrage to label all of Obama's foreign tours as Apology Tours. I think it's obvious that they are apology tours. What Obama is apologizing for is all the people who look back at the past eight years and conclude there's nothing to apologize for. Some think this is a sign of weakness by Obama, while others think it's a sign of weakness by the United States as a whole (the appearance of might being what keeps you from having to use that might). But for many on the right, the past eight years went swimmingly, and Obama is nothing but an anomoly in the wake of their permanent republican majority.
I think Lewis Black said it best (about the Bush Administration's narcissistic cowboy diplomacy and their refusal to admit mistakes) in one of his comedy routines, which I'm paraphrasing: if you worked at a job where every day one of your co-workers walked in and said "I'm the greatest f*cker here and you should all count yourselves lucky to be in my presence and kiss my ass cause you'll never be as great as me!!!" how would you feel towards that particular co-worker?
Exactly.
Update: Hmmm... based on some of the comments, perhaps I should elaborate, or try to clarify, as in my head this all makes perfect sense.
Ever since the election the right has labeled anything Obama critical of the United States (or of the people who spent the past eight years running it) that Obama says to a foreign audience as part of what they are calling Obama's Apology Tour (to domestic audiences it's called the Blame America First tour). Media Matters documents several of them here.
I have seen the liberal blogs disagree with such a label, but I think Obama IS on an apology tour, because there's a lot in the past eight years worth apologizing for. What Obama is doing right now is essentially going from country to country and saying "I'm not Bush." He is apologizing for the United States in his own way, and the right is throwing a hissy fit over it. They're doing what they always do: label dissent as treason, label criticism of their policies as weakness, and try to make it so that they will never, ever be called upon to answer for their disasterous policies of the past eight years.
Conservatives think they have nothing to apologize for. That's why the right's pissed: they are the ones Obama's apologizing for.
