Harry Reid is an embarrassment as Majority Leader. When he is not getting outsmarted by Roland Burris, he parrots right-wing talking points on closing Gitmo, invoking language about not letting terrorists free in the United States.
I think we should primary him.
If we are going to have a chance at primarying Reid, we need to do it now. At the very least, we should put pressure on him to act more like a Democrat and to be a more effective leader.
We might have a viable candidate to replace him in Jack Carter, son of the former president and Senatorial candidate in 2006. Although he lost to Ensign, polling suggests that Reid is very unpopular at home and Carter has already proven he can win a Democratic primary.
If Carter wins the primary, he'd have a very good shot at retaining the seat. The Republicans don't appear to be attracting any top-tier candidates for the job, according to Nate Silver.
However, even if a Republican were to win the seat, this is still the perfect time to take a chance on ousting Reid. With Al Franken about to be sworn in as the 60th Democratic Senator and with the 2010 Senate election schedule favoring Democrats, we will probably gain several seats, easily maintaining a filibuster-proof majority.
That filibuster-proof majority is only useful, however, in the hands of a Majority Leader who does an effective job of fighting for Democratic principles. Imagine someone like Russ Feingold as Majority Leader!
The goal of this site is to elect more and better Democrats. In Nevada, the focus should be on better.
