I'd like to get involved in overpopulation issues, but I'm not sure who would be most effective. But this big DKos community probably has lots of ideas.
Clearly, all of our environmental problems are exacerbated by our massive overpopulation on this planet (over 6.2 billion) that continues to grow. Although birth rates have gone down around the world, they are still way too high.
Our overpopulation is directly responsible for the continuing species losses we are experiencing (at accelerating rates), and we are headed for a Malthusian dieback, which will not be pretty. The only near-term alternative is reducing our population through more civilized means than those that Malthus lists. (In the far term, there is massive emigration to space, but that's another matter.)
Usually, when you bring up overpopulation, people jump to draconian solutions like China's one child policy, even though there are proven humane ways to reduce birth rates: give women access to health care and education.
But I've had plenty of theory. I want to now find an organization that is doing effective work on the problem of human overpopulation. Who do you recommend?
