Oh, yeah, I’m going there. What better way to celebrate my 100th Top Comments diary that by abusing Pete Hoekstra. I’ve had very few laughs in my life lately, but Pete has certainly provided most of them
By now everyone with an internet connection knows about the illustrious Pete Hoekstra (R-lala land), whose idiotic post on Twitter equating the suffering of Republicans with the oppression of the Iranian people has drawn massive abuse on Twitter.
But that was just the beginning.
Soon there was a website dedicated to his infamy: Hoekstra is a Meme, from which I gleaned these (absent the cool photos):
- Took a wrong turn and drove onto an Indian Reservation. Now I know what it’s like to be Columbus.
- I lent my neighbour $20 for his electric bill. It was just like delivering Obama’s stimulus package.
- My office firewall won’t let me get on Ebay. This must be what the Iranians are going through.
- Stepped over a puddle in the parking lot today — felt like Moses leading his people out of Egypt.
But that is just the tip of the iceberg. Over at Balloon Juice, commentors were having more than a little fun at the Hoek’s expense:
- Your continuing mockery of Peter Hoekstra is just like the Hutu militia massacres in Rwanda.
- I burned my finger this morning. Now I know what it was like at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire.
- Stuck inside working from home today. Now I know how Anne Frank felt.
- stepped over a puddle in the parking lot today — felt like Moses leading his people out of Egypt
- I’ve just run out of vermouth. Exactly like being in the Kalahari around here.
- The local cafe ran out of soup just before I went up for lunch; now I know what the Irish Potato Famine was like.
- Someone stole a bag of potting soil from my carport today. This must be how Native Americans felt when they lost their lands.
And they are funny. But for my money, the real guffaws are at Talking Points Memo:
- My mom made me carry the trash out to the alley. Now I know what the Bataan Death March was like.
-I laughed so hard that water came out of my nose -- now I also know what it is like to be waterboarded.
- It was warm in my office, and a little stuffy. Just like Pompeii in 79 AD.
- My boss just asked me to update our departmental web page... It's like I'm in a Soviet gulag.
- I had to pick up my dogs poop on a walk this morning. Now I know the pain they felt when cleaning up after Chernobyl.
- I was served chai tea this morning. Now I know what it is like to be hemlocked like Socrates.
- I touched my hot breakfast plate and felt solidarity with Joan of Arc.
- I was out of work a few years ago. Now I know what the Great Depression was like.
- Had the flu recently - it brought home to me the massive suffering caused by the bubonic plague during the little dark age of the 14th century.
- I made a birdie in golf recently. Now I have all the confidence and ability of Tiger Woods.
- Got bitten on the cheek by a mosquito yesterday, now i know what it's like to be shot in the face by a vice president
- I made some popcorn in the microwave and had this sudden empathy for the civilians of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
- I woke up under my covers today, kinda like I was buried in a coal mine cave in.
- My lip swelled up once. Now I know how the Elephant Man felt.
- After cleaning off my desk this morning, I sneezed four times. I felt just like those people who lived through the Dust Bowl.
- My dog licked my face ... and it was just like getting waterboarded.
- I went down my slip and slide ... and I felt like Capt. Sollenberger in the Hudson.
- I got a chill in bed last night, I now feel a kinship with Washington and his troops at Valley Forge.
- I got pulled over today because my vehicle description matched that of one recently reported stolen. I now feel a new solidarity with my fellows in Guantanamo.
- Slipped in the pool and almost got my hair wet. Now I know what the tsunami victims felt.
- My catamaran capsized last week...now I know what it must've been like to be on the titanic.
Of course, I had to leave a lot of them out – those are just a few of my faves.
