I am horrified that Iran is so lacking in democratic institutions that its government is now using indefinite, preventive detention without charges to lock up protestors. As I explained last month, such detention should only be used when countries need to stop dangerous people who haven't committed any crime, or who are already so "tainted" by government torture that they can't possibly receive a fair trial. Until Iran's Ahmedinejad can show this to be the case, his brand of indefinite preventive detention is utterly unjustified.
Change is coming.
Some day Iran and its people will have an 8th Amendment like ours to protect the accused.
Some day soon we'll feel safe enough that 46% of Americans won't consider condoning torture.
And some day we won't have to destroy videos and hide the photos of the people we've tortured.
I knew you'd understand.
