chess Pictures, Images and PhotosDear Kossacks:

Yes, the Daily Kos Chess Tournament 2009 (DKCT09) is still going.  We're into Round 3!  See below for standings and upcoming match information, courtesy of a neat new website by papicek.

Quick announcement #1: DKCT09 diaries will be posted each day at or around 2 pm ET.

Quick announcement #2: As the number of players in the field has dropped to 116, we may be shortening the tournament from 8 rounds to 7.  More to come on this at a later date.

Also, to wrap up Round 2....the Black Knight always triumphs!  Of 61 matches in Round 2, Black was victorious 54.1% of the time.  Considering that Black wins less than half the time when White opens with the King's Pawn to e4, this is pretty remarkable.  An aberration?  A trend?  We shall see.

Oh, alright.  In case you clicked over here thinking you'd see the Monty Python video, here you go:

A belated hat tip to FWIW for posting a tournament open thread in my stead yesterday.  Cheers, man.

MATCH-UPS

The match-ups for Round 3 have been selected by the Tournament Director based on the results of Rounds 1-2 and the approximate skill rating of each player.  All matches will have a 30-minute time limit per player, 0 bonus time.  Every effort is being ensured to maintain color balance.  In other words, every player will have ample opportunity to play as both White and Black throughout the tournament.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
