The nation has started to recover from the shock of Sarah Palin’s resignation as Governor of Alaska, but many Americans still remain curious as to the reason behind her actions. The media has generously swirled numerous theories for her resignation ranging from the vast amounts of ethics violations she is accused of to her inability to handle the pressure associated with her position.
While many of these are in some aspect credible ideas, I have a hard time believing that they are enough of a reason to push a politician out of office who has basically spent the last two years getting made fun of. Perhaps, the answer is much simpler... like Sarah Palin out grew the position of Governor of Alaska? Basically, she doesn’t need the title and/or experience to take the next step in what’s left of her political career.
Now, hear me out – this is by no means an Anthem of Love to Sarah Palin. But, how many former VP candidates for the losing team have enjoyed the same level of celebrity Palin has? Please correct me if I’m wrong, as I might be too young to remember, but I cannot find any information supporting a Lloyd Bentsen love fest after his failed bid on the Dukakis/Bentsen ticket of 1988. I for sure can’t find any shirts, bumper stickers, leg warmers, or People Magazine covers with his face on them. Same concept applies to Jack Kemp. After the Dole/Kemp ticket failed in 1996 Kemp simply reverted to his original form of a person known more for his fantastic football career than his stamp of politics. C’mon, Kemp didn’t even rank high enough on the charts for Saturday Night Live to create a parody for him, which of course, is the only true welcome to politics!
Palin, on the other hand, managed to emerge from her defeat as an A-list celebrity pursued everywhere she goes by paparazzi. Granted, the majority of her fame is a direct result of the media requiring a Yin to Obama’s Yang (and McCain was too boring to play the role) but it doesn’t change the fact that Palin has as much chance of authoring a best-selling cookbook as starring in her own show – and by show I mean like on weekdays at 10am on ABC, not some random conservative talk radio show only die hard GOPers listen to.
Palin is many things, but she is not dumb. She must be aware that she has several opportunities outside of politics that will allow her to maintain her public voice (which she secretly craves) while getting to play the role of Mom (which she openly craves and cannot be faulted for).
The GOP and Palin both know that the chances of her becoming President were slim to begin with and the road to the White House doesn’t exactly run through Wasilla, AK. Why continue as a lame-duck Governor of an out of the way state when so much more could be achieved outside of the realm of politics.
